Since the 1970's, the obesity rate in this country has doubled, with two-thirds of our population now overweight. A recent study at Harvard found that obesity may soon surpass tobacco as the number-one cause of cancer deaths. No matter how frightening that may sound, the statistics are even worse for our children. The percentage of overweight youths age 12 to 19 has nearly quadrupled between 1976 and 2004. Indeed, 17 percent of this country's youth are now overweight or obese.

So what's causing this crisis? And what, exactly, is happening to our children? Here's the truth: It's not the TV, and it's not the Internet, and it's not the video games or the cell phones or the iPods. It's not the culture that's endangering our children's health.
